About us “DAYA” (Destitute Aged and Young Association), is a voluntary non-profit making child focused organization registered under the Societies Act of India with a mission to work for the poorest of the poor both in rural and urban areas in the state of Orissa, one of the most economically backward states of India. The Hindi word DAYA means "compassion" in English. DAYA has been working in Orissa for the last 15 years and has undertaken different social developmental projects. DAYA has started a project with partnership with Capital Govt. Hospital, Bhubaneswar to distribute free medicine against tuberculosis (TB) in a slum near Khandagiri, Bhubaneswar. Mrs. Shantipriya Basiston is the Secretary and Director of the organization. After obtaining her Bachelor in Education she worked for 10 years as a primary school teacher in the Pulbani District of Orissa. This is a tribal district were there is much poverty. Shantipriya saw the great need among the women and children and how the children were often neglected, ill treated and unwanted. Many children had lost their parents through sickle cell anemia, malaria and other diseases. Many parents were too poor to care for their children. This gave Shantipriya the desire to provide a better life for the little ones and so, after some time, the vision to relocate them to Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Orissa became a reality.
